Professor Karen Wiltshire is the Chair of Climate Science at Trinity College Dublin, guiding the University towards an innovative and resilient climate future through the founding of the Trinity Climate Gateway. Her research focuses on marine socio-ecosystems and is a leading voice in Irish, German and international climate-related coastal and marine science. Passionate about supporting the next generation of marine and climate scientists, she co-founded the Ocean Training Partnership with and the All-Atlantic SEA Network for sea-going training. She directed the NIPPON-POGO Centre of Excellence for Oceanography for 10 years.

Her career spans leadership roles including the Max Planck Institute, the University of St Andrews, and the Alfred Wegener Institute, where she served as Vice Director and was Director of Coastal Research since 2006. Wiltshire has contributed to international science policy through UNEP, SCOR-UNESCO, IPCC, IIASA, and as the first female Chair of POGO. She recently was lead coordinating author of GEO 07 “Oceans and Coasts”. In 2025 she was honoured as Professional Fellow of Trinity College Dublin and with the A.G. Huntsman Award for Excellence in the Marine Sciences.
